Sergei Tchoban: Tempo Espelhado/Mirroring Time

Sergei Tchoban, German artist and architect, explores in his work the way architecture relates the past, present and future of cities culturally diverse and demarcated by a historical and social legacy. In the exhibition Sergei Tchoban: mirroring time, developed for the MAC USP, we present a compendium of his production from the last ten years, including unreleased drawings as well as images of buildings he has conceived. The drawings serve as the starting point for Sergei Tchoban's artistic and conceptual performance, which he also uses for his passion for artistic conception in the theater scenography and exhibition design.

We trace a path through several of his production`s themes and performances, which emphasizes the real and imaginary structures of a metropolis by fusing historical heritage and futuristic architecture with fantastic elements hovering the duality of fiction and imagination. According to Sergei Tchoban, everything an architect does is just a reflection of the time we live in and consequently he creates a new layer on the discourse of history. His works extol silhouettes of "canonical" cities relevant for their monumental and historical importance. Dynamic, bold forms and the plasticity of these representations allow us to analyse the evolution and the characteristic language of different times through architecture also reinforcing the contrast between the old and the new. In this duality, the visible traces of destruction are like scars of a past or current experience, such as the ruins in Ukraine caused by the war, serving as testimony to the ongoing political disputes. Sergei Tchoban tirelessly emphasises the transformation of architectural monuments. Would such a process be merely the result of the metamorphosis of urban centres, or would it be a deliberate intervention of change with a focus on the layout of the future. Though not necessarily based on the past, this might be understood as an isolated laboratory of postmodern life.

We have here testimonies of wealth, achievements, risks and reconstruction of human existence through the representation of architectural heritage. The Sergei Tchoban: mirroring time exhibition highlights this context while Brazil is undergoing of renewal, reunion and reconstruction of its sociopolitical and cultural heritage.

Sergei Tchoban, artista e arquiteto alemão, explora em sua obra a forma como a arquitetura relata o passado, presente e futuro das cidades culturalmente diversificadas e demarcadas por um legado histórico-social. Na exposição Sergei Tchoban – tempo espelhado concebida para o MAC-USP, com curadoria da historiadora de arte Tereza de Arruda, apresentamos um compêndio de sua produção dos últimos dez anos incluindo desenhos inéditos, bem como imagens de edifícios por ele realizados. Os desenhos são em partes ponto de partida para a atuação de Sergei Tchoban, que além de artista é um requisitado arquiteto, o qual compartilha também com a cenografia de teatro e o design de exposições sua paixão pela concepção artística.

Apresentamos um percurso por diversas temáticas e atuações de sua produção, que explora as estruturas reais e imaginárias de uma metrópole através da junção do patrimônio histórico e da arquitetura futurista com fantásticos elementos pairando a dualidade da ficção e imaginação. Segundo Sergei Tchoban: tudo o que um arquiteto faz é apenas um reflexo do tempo em que vivemos e, consequentemente, ele cria uma nova camada sobre o discurso da história. Seus trabalhos enaltecem silhuetas de cidades "canônicas" relevantes por sua condição monumental e histórica. Formas dinâmicas, ousadas e a plasticidade destas representações permitem-nos analisar a evolução e a linguagem característica de tempos distintos através da arquitetura a reforçar também o contraste entre o antigo e o novo. Nesta dualidade os visíveis vestígios da destruição são como cicatrizes de uma vivência passada ou atual como as ruínas na Ucrânia causadas pela guerra servindo como testemunho dos conflitos políticos vigentes. Sergei Tchoban enfatiza incansavelmente a transformação de monumentos arquitetônicos. Seria tal processo resultado apenas da metamorfose dos centros urbanos, ou uma intervenção deliberada de mudança com enfoque no traçado do futuro. Este não se baseia necessariamente no passado, mas pode ser visto como um laboratório isolado da vida pós-moderna.

Temos aqui testemunhos de riqueza, conquistas, riscos e reconstrução da existência humana através da representação do patrimônio arquitetônico. A mostra Sergei Tchoban: tempo espelhado ressalta este contexto concomitantemente ao momento em que o Brasil encontra-se numa fase de renovação, reunião e reconstrução do seu patrimônio sócio-político e cultural.
