Kunsthalle Rostock is pleased to present a survey of recent Cuban art entitled Kuba Libre, curated by Tereza de Arruda under the auspices Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
Kuba Libre, a group exhibition especially put together for Kunsthalle Rostock shows over 30 artists and includes works made over the last 20 years by artists living and working in Cuba. The aim of the exhibition is to showcase the artistic practice imbedded in the country's recent historical context. Within the current socio-political climate, this involves looking to the future and at the end of the 54-year-long diplomatic struggle between the USA and Cuba.
Cuba is amidst big changes and for this exhibition the relation between the former GDR and Cuba, which was the first country to recognize East Germany as a state, is central. Already in 1961 the first bilateral agreements were signed. Apart from contractual ties, the close relationship between both states is evident from the shared visions in economics, social and cultural life.
The choice of works included in this exhibition was arrived at after extensive studio visits in Havana. Kuba Libre brings together artists working in the local traditional, but also critical positions that oscillate between 'official' and 'unofficial' art. It takes stock of the current situation of artistic production in Cuba by juxtaposing artistic dissidents and official representatives of the country's culture. It is this period of socio-political change that will clarify the role of opportunism and open criticism for the country's future. Often artistic practice gives a first glimpse of where this journey is headed. It is precisely for this reason that Cuba's artists are looked upon as strong representatives of their country.
Participating artists: Lidzie Alvisa, Glauber Ballestero, Abel Barroso, Ivan Capote, Roberto Diago, Humberto Diaz, Roberto Fabelo, Aimée Garcia, Glenda León, Kelvin Lopez, Susana P. D. Matienzo, Reinier Nande, Jorge Otero, René Peña, Carlos Quintana, Sandra Ramos, Esterio Segura, Liudmila & Nelson und Rachel Valdés. Contemporary positions will be supplemented with works from Fototeca de Cuba and Taller de Grabado.
Kuba Libre is an exhibition specifically designed for the Kunsthalle Rostock, which is the only exhibition space developed by East Germany. In addition the city of Rostock has close ties to Cuba. Fidel Castro visited Rostock twice. The exhibition takes place in partnership with Centro de Arte Cntemporâneo Wifredo Lam, Fototeca and Taller Experimental de Grafica de la Habana. Kuba Libre is curated by Tereza de Arruda, guest curator and curatorial adviser of the Havana Biennale since 1997.
Die Kunsthalle Rostock freut sich die Gruppenausstellung Kuba Libre kuratiert von Tereza de Arruda unter der Schirmherrschaft von Frank-Walter Steinmeier zu präsentieren.
Kuba Libre, eine Gruppenausstellung, die für die Kunsthalle Rostock konzipiert wurde, zeigt über 30 akuelle Positionen und Werke aus den letzten 20 Jahren von Künstler, die auf Kuba leben. Ziel ist die Kunst, die heute in Kuba am Beispiel ihrer historischen und kulturellen Entwicklung produziert wird, zu zeigen. Dazu kommt auch die Spekulation bezüglich ihrer Zukunft an Hand der aktuellen politischen Entwicklung: dem Ende des 54-jährigen diplomatische Streits zwischen den USA und Kuba.
Zurzeit befindet sich Kuba im Umbruch. Für diese Ausstellung spielt die politische und kulturelle Beziehung zwischen Kuba und der DDR eine Rolle, da Kuba 1960 das erste lateinamerikanische Land, das die DDR völkerrechtlich anerkannte.
Bereits 1961 wurde ein erstes Abkommen zwischen beiden Staaten unterzeichnet. Nicht nur die Vielzahl der vertraglichen Bindungen belegte die Intensität der Beziehungen zwischen beiden Völkerrechtssubjekten, sondern auch die Themen ließen kaum einen Bereich von Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft aus.
Die Auswahl der Werke wurde hauptsächlich in Ateliers der Künstler in Havanna getroffen. Diese Ausstellung verknüpft künstlerische Positionen, die sich zwischen lokaler Tradition, kritischen Positionen, offizieller und inoffizieller Kunst bewegen. Sie präsentiert die aktuelle Realität Kubas am Beispiel von Dissidenten und offiziellen Vertretern der lokalen Kultur. Genau in dieser Umbruchphase wird klar, in wieweit Opportunismus oder ein kritischer Blick eine Rolle für die Zukunft des Landes spielen. Oftmals liefern künstlerische Positionen Einblicke wie sich die Bevölkerung bewegen wird und welche neuen Kontexte sie erobern wird. Deshalb stehen die kubanischen Künstler heute als starke Vertreter ihre eigenes Landes und seiner Bevölkerung.
Dazu gehört Malerei, Installation, Objekte, Photographie, Video und Performance von über 20 auf Kuba lebenden zeitgenössische Künstlern, wie Lidzie Alvisa, Glauber Ballestero, Abel Barroso, Ivan Capote, Roberto Diago, Humberto Diaz, Roberto Fabelo, Aimée Garcia, Glenda León, Kelvin Lopez, Susana P. D. Matienzo, Reinier Nande, Jorge Otero, René Peña, Carlos Quintana, Sandra Ramos, Esterio Segura, Liudmila & Nelson und Rachel Valdés. Die zeitgenössiche Positionen werden mit Werken aus der Sammlung von Fototeca de Cuba und Taller de Grabado erweitert.
Kuba Libre wird für die Kunsthalle Rostock konzipiert, die als einziger Kunstmuseumsneubau der DDR konzipiert wurde. Dazu pflegt Rostock eine enge Beziehung zu Kuba. Fidel Castro war zwei Mal in Rostock. Die Ausstellung findet in Partnerschaft mit Centro Wifredo Lam, Fototeca und Taller de Grabado statt. Sie wird von Tereza de Arruda, die seit 1997 Gastkuratorin bei der Havanna Biennale tätig ist, kuratiert.
