Rereading and reviewing historical tales

The tentacles of the Curitiba International Biennial extend to various parts of the city. It is even possible to include the Paraná Public Library. This poses an exciting challenge, enabling direct dialogue between the general public and something that is unusual for many, since they visit the library looking for resources for school, work or personal projects or seeking a refuge from the everyday. It is known that in times of crisis public libraries bring together local communities, providing comfort, shelter (both in terms of the literature and the space) and contact with other people who live locally.

Raquel Kogan's interactive installation, Reread – which I was lucky enough to be able to experience years ago, in a Itaú Cultural São Paulo show – comprises 50 apparently identical books, distinguished from one another by a gold number on the spine. These are meant to be heard not read. The sound involves extracts of texts selected by 50 people, who give them content and voice. On opening a book, the participant's face is lit up by an LED and the sound is set off. This produces quadriphonic ambient sound, in real time. It thus creates a palimpsest of voices, timbers and languages, constantly changing as the books are handled.

The piece seems to fit the exhibition setting perfectly, since it combines the traditional elements of a library with the attractions of contemporary life, such as interaction, which has led generations around the world to distance themselves from the unique and introspective experience of reading a conventional book. Reread has to create a link between audience faithful to the new media and those who appreciate a good read.


Relendo e revendo estórias históricas

A Bienal Internacional de Curitiba estende seus tentáculos por diversos locais da cidade. Surge a partir dessa postura a possibilidade de incorporar a Biblioteca Pública do Paraná em seu roteiro. Eis aí um desafio excitante, por possibilitar o diálogo direto entre o público geral com algo para muitos deles inusitado, uma vez que se dirigem à biblioteca buscando aí a fonte para suas pesquisas escolares, profissionais ou pessoais; ou, ainda, buscando um refúgio do dia a dia. Sabe-se que em momentos de crise as bibliotecas públicas unem as comunidades locais, por oferecerem aconchego, refúgio (no conteúdo literário e no espaço) e contato com outros membros locais.

A instalação interativa Reler, de Raquel Kogan – que tive a possibilidade de vivenciar anos atrás, em uma mostra no Itaú Cultural de São Paulo – é composta por 50 livros aparentemente iguais, diferenciados por um número dourado na sua lombada. Estes devem ser ouvidos e não lidos. O som remete a trechos de textos selecionados por 50 pessoas, dando-os conteúdo e voz. Ao abrir um livro, o interagente tem seu rosto iluminado por um led e o som é disparado. Surge, então, um som quadrifônico no ambiente, em tempo real. Cria-se, assim, um palimpsesto de vozes, timbres e idiomas, que se vai modificando continuamente, à medida que os livros são manuseados.

Esta obra me pareceu perfeita para o contexto no qual será exposta, pois reúne em si elementos tradicionais de uma biblioteca, junto a atrativos da vida contemporânea, como a interatividade, que acaba por levar gerações em todo o mundo a distanciarem-se da experiência única e introspectiva da leitura de um livro convencional. A obra Reler há de criar um elo entre o público fiel das novas mídias e os apreciadores de uma boa leitura!
