Curators Ma Lin and Tereza de Arruda organized the exhibit that gathers more than 110 works by 62 artists, including important names in the international scene like Ai Weiwei, Luo Brothers, Ma Liuming, Miao Xiaochum, Song Gang, and Yin Xiuzhen, in addition to a selection of ancient art and textile art

Wang Qingsong, Wang Shugang, Xiong Yu and the pair Rong Rong & Inri have developed pieces especially for this event, and Lu Song and Yuang Gong are coming to São Paulo to produce their work.

HSBC Bank Brasil presents the exhibit ChinaArteBrasil from April 10 through May 18 at Oca, in Ibirapuera Park, São Paulo. Organized by G11 and Brazil’s Ministry of Culture, the exhibit will be showing for the first time in Brazil a unique overview of contemporary Chinese art, gathering more than 110 works by 62 artists, which have never been shown in São Paulo.

The selection includes renowned artists present in the international scene since the 1990’s, including the highlights Ai Weiwei, Luo Brothers, Ma Liuming, Miao Xiaochum, Ni Weihua, Qu Yan, Yin Xiuzhen, and also representatives of the youngest generation.

Having as curators the art historians Ma Lin, from Shanghai, and Tereza de Arruda, Brazilian based in Berlin, ChinaArteBrasil proposes intensifying the cultural interaction between Brazil and China, countries with widely different traditions and contexts, but which many times walk side by side. Leading drivers of the BRICS (group gathering Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) and hosts of important international events such as the Olympics, Brazil and China increasingly attract the global look not only to their economic potential, but also to their artistic and cultural scene.

The exhibit will be featuring a wide range of works, with many types of artistic languages and media, like painting, sculpture, installations, photography, video, site specifics, performances, textile art, and ancient art. The collection covers different historic ages of Chinese art, including works from the dynasty times until contemporary days, produced after year 2000.

Some of the works were especially created for the ChinaArteBrasil exhibit, like those by Wang Qingsong, Wang Shugang, Xiong Yu and the pair Rong Rong & Inri. In contrast, the work of Lu Song and Yuang Gong will only be known here. These artists are coming to São Paulo to develop their works to be presented inside Oca and possibly for actions in other spaces of the city.

The highlights include monumental works like paintings more than 16 meters long (Wang Shun-Kit), many interactive projections (Jin Jiangbo), a large scale projection on Oca’s dome (Miao Xiaochun), and large installations (Ai Weiwei, Rong Rong & Inri, Wang Qingsong, Yuan Gong). Coming from artists themselves and collections in China and Europe, the works reveal an introspective and self-critical essence, but also a lot of humor and irony.
